DESCRIPTION
Becca and Howie Corbett are a happily married couple whose perfect world is forever changed when their young son, Danny, is killed by a car. Becca, an executive-turned-stay-at-home mother, tries to redefine her existence in a surreal landscape of well-meaning family and friends. Painful, poignant, and often funny, Becca's experiences lead her to find solace in a mysterious relationship with a troubled young comic-book artist, Jason - the teenage driver of the car that killed Danny. Becca's fixation with Jason pulls her away from memories of Danny, while Howie immerses himself in the past, seeking refuge in outsiders who offer him something Becca is unable to give. The Corbetts, both adrift, make surprising and dangerous choices as they choose a path that will determine their fate.

Becca e Howie Corbett (Nicole Kidman e Aaron Eckhart) tornano alla loro esistenza quotidiana all’indomani di una perdita improvvisa e scioccante. Soltanto otto mesi prima erano una felice famiglia di provincia, a cui non mancava nulla. Ora sono intrappolati in un labirinto di ricordi, desideri, sensi di colpa, recriminazioni, sarcasmo e rabbia controllata, da cui sembrano incapaci di fuggire. Nulla della loro vecchia vita resta uguale, né il bucato, né i brani di Al Green allo stereo, nemmeno il loro cane… eppure non è ancora finita. I cambiamenti avvengono in modi repentini, quanto imprevisti. Becca si riavvicina cautamente a sua madre, petulante e logorroica (Dianne Wiest), e segretamente si apre all’adolescente coinvolto nel fatale incidente che ha cambiato la sua vita (Miles Teller); mentre Howie si lascia andare sognando di farsi consolare da un’altra donna (Sandra Oh). Eppure, nonostante abbiano perso la direzione della propria esistenza, i Corbett continuano a cercare un modo per tornare alla loro vita, che, per quanto appaia inutile e insensata, ancora sembra mantenere uno spazio per la bellezza, le risate e la tenerezza. Il viaggio che ne scaturisce è uno sguardo intimo a due personaggi molto reali che stanno imparando a riconciliarsi con un mondo che è stato scardinato dal proprio asse.
