DESCRIPTION
Keong comes from Hong Kong to visit New York for his uncle's wedding. His uncle runs a market in the Bronx and Keong offers to help out while Uncle is on his honeymoon. During his stay in the Bronx, Keong befriends a neighbor kid and beats up some neighborhood thugs who cause problems at the market. Meanwhile, one of those petty thugs in the local gang stumbles into a criminal situation way over his head. Blinded by greed, his involvement draws his gang, the kid, Keong, and the whole neighborhood into a deadly crossfire. When the lazy cops fail to successfully resolve matters, Keong takes things into his own hands. Needless to say, much spectacular kung-fu and outrageous action sequences follow....

Note : Stanley Tong's Rumble in the Bronx might not be Jackie Chan's best movie, but it's definitely the one that put him squarely into the mainstream in the west. The plot is, honestly, ridiculous nonsense, the humor is extremely broad, and the characters are little more than stereotypes, but it's mostly just a showcase for Jackie Chan's wimming charm and even more winning stuntwork, and in that, it succeeds marvelously. Turn off your brain a bit, relax, take yourself back to a more innocent time, the 90s, when NYC street gangs were multiethnic, rode dirt bikes, listened to Ministry, and could be convinced to better themselves with a well-expressed monologue after a fight.
Keung travels from Hong Kong to attend his uncle's wedding in New York City. His uncle runs a supermarket in The Bronx, but is in the process of selling it before his wedding to a Black woman whose dream it is to live on a ranch. When his uncle Bill leaves for his honeymoon, Keung offers to stay on to help the new owner, Elaine, with the transition, and ends up getting into a conflict with a local street gang lead by Tony, whose girlfriend Nancy is Bill's (and now Keung's) neigbor, along with her wheelchair-bound little brother Danny. A member of Tony's gang gets involved in a diamond heist gone wrong, and hides a bag of diamonds in Danny's wheelchair cushion, which leads to complications as the crime organization behind the heist come looking for Tony's gang, Danny, and the wheelchair, just as Keung is starting to get to know Nancy better, and his conflict with Tony comes to a head. It all ends in a ridiculous climactic sequence involving a hovercraft, but it's better seen unspoiled.
This is a very good-looking remaster, excellent color and contrast, quite sharp, and with decent grain. The English 5.1 track also sounds good (I understand this is in large part a dub, but there's no original Cantonese soundtrack version available anywhere). No commentary track or anything, but at least some subtitles.
