Il protagonista della vicenda è Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), che trascorre la sua esistenza nell’idilliaco isolotto di Seahaven. Nonostante l’apparente serenità, l’uomo prova un sentimento di angosciante insofferenza per la sua vita e, con il passare del tempo, il senso di estraneazione lo costringe a dubitare di tutto.
Truman è molto amato dai genitori, della moglie Meryl (Laura Linney) e dell’amico Marlon (Noah Emmerich), ma percepisce uno stacco sempre più netto tra le sue reazioni emotive e quelle delle persone a lui care.
Quando si verificano una serie di circostanze del tutto inusuali, Truman decide di indagare sul suo passato....
