A Discovery of Witches è l'adattamento televisivo della trilogia fantasy All Souls di Deborah Harkness, creato per Bad Wolf e Sky Productions da David Auburn (Charlie's Angels). La storia si concentra su Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer, Hacksaw Ridge), una storica di ruolo all'Università di Oxford, che dopo aver rinnegato per anni le sue origini da strega, scopre un manoscritto magico nella Bodleian Library durante una delle sue tante ore di studio. Da appassionata studiosa e caparbia pedagoga, Diana non riesce a lasciar perdere l'idea di indagare sul mistero custodito tra quelle pagine e decide quindi di ritornare nel mondo della magia. Qui, incontra un misterioso vampiro genetista di nome Matthew Clermont (Matthew Goode, The Crown), che si offre di aiutarla nell'impresa, nonostante la secolare faida tra le rispettive razze. Insieme, i due improbabili alleati si impegnano a proteggere il manoscritto dalle tante creature magiche intenzionate a distruggerlo.
