The BD source has a quite poor picture quality. Native 720p Drawings have been upscaled using a overly crisp upscaling algorithm, resulting in severe aliasing and ringing. There's also an overlay of heavy noise. Consequently, quite a number of scenes have lots of compression artifacts due to insufficient bit-rate. Dark areas have severe colour banding issue despite the heavy noise being added. To make matters even worse, this 2013 title produced by Asread, just like their 2011 title Mirai Nikki, has a few cuts showing very bad binary aliasing.
First, to fix the lines, given that this anime has a blurry looking, and some parts were badly encoded because of the heavy noise, we took a more aggressive descaling and reconstruction approach. This eliminated much of the aliasing while also improved line sharpness. We then performed a lot of scenefiltering and masking to fix the broken lines, and finished with a relatively strong de-ringing which also removed the mosquito noise around line edges. Second, to tackle the colour banding in dark areas, we evaluated their severity in the denoised pictures, carefully designed protective measures and limits based on the brightness, then applied de-banding accordingly. Moreover, for the heavy noise, we combined several denoising algorithms with the aim of best separating it from the picture. We then improved the visuals in badly encoded scenes by reducing and replacing the noise with dynamic noise of the same strength. Finally, adaptive denoising was used to control the output file size.
