Today I present to you what should be a perfectly aligned exact sample precise cut of the "new" 5.1 mix and "remastered" 2.0 legacy audio. I decided to only share the specific DEATH(true)^2 and The End of Evangelion rather than the complete DISC 07 and DISC 08 tracks that I put together since it seems likely that most people probably have either Beatrice-Raws for Revival of Evangelion or maybe some other encode but as long as it was cut on the correct chapters, it fits. Currently I watch NGE as a remux from my own JPBD discs which is why I originally made them as a complete track to fit sourcing the Khara intro and Intermission segment from DISC 08. If anyone else consumes EVA as a BD-Remux then it really is as simple as stringing it together with Audacity using the Khara intro and Intermission since I already did the pixel peeping work to get it down to the closest audio samples. I used MKVToolNix to first create an MKA for each audio track including the chapters then afterwards used the Chapter Editor to segment each of the necessary blocks of audio then foobar2000 will read Matroska files just like a cue file. For convenience if anyone wants to make a complete audio track, I have supplied the 5.1 and 2.0 Khara Intro and Intermission files in the Mega folder. I actually ended up redoing these a few times. At first I only counted frame differences and it actually worked pretty well. Then afterwards I decided to zoom in more and check because sure enough, there was still a slight variation then I adopted actually counting samples along with frames. Rather than switching to only sample counting, for me it was way easier to count frames that I already determined first then remaining slight amount in samples. When there was a hard reference point to find in the 5.1 track, I used the 2.0 track to find a good spot and vice versa. Pretty neat how the opposite tracks were able to help each other out in a sense.
Just in case anyone else wants to do this with the English tracks or if other languages are cut the same as well, I'll share my results I came up with since I documented all of it.
- DEATH(true)^2 = cut 23 frames and 43 samples from beginning + cut end to match JPBD audio (audio supplied here can substitute since I already aligned them)
- End of Evangelion = cut 28 frames and 36 samples from beginning + 134,534,756 sample starting point (or any of that blank space, that just happens to be my reference point) then cut 25 frames and 80 samples (this is after THANATOS -IF I CAN'T BE YOURS-) + add ending frames missing using JPBD audio (or cut the 5+ minutes to match the end if you didn't already leave out translated credits)
At least the version of Audacity I used had it on by default but make sure to turn off dithering since source files are already 16-bit. Before anyone says USBD has 24-bit audio, in case you didn't know from looking at the file size and bitrate, here's what eac3to has to say about it: "The original audio track has a constant bit depth of 16 bits. Superfluous zero bytes detected, will be stripped in 2nd pass. Starting 2nd pass... Decoding FLAC... Reducing depth from 24 to 16 bits..." As for the Video Format Version of 25' and 26' that has 24-bit LPCM on USBD, I have not ripped and tested it yet but I'm assuming it's still 16 within a 24 container.
I'm not sure if there has been any discussion elsewhere, but back when it was released on Netflix I realized that the Japanese audio was different from the original 5.1 renewal mix. Recently when listening to it I thought since the audio levels are really juiced up, I thought it gave the impression of audio booming in a movie theater. After that I immediately made the connection that perhaps this "international" audio is the 5.1 mix that was created when the entirety of Neon Genesis Evangelion had a theatrical run back in early 2019 I believe it was. I read through most of the booklet back when I got my Ultimate Edition and I don't remember seeing anything about this in there. As for the remastered legacy audio, it is indeed different but not as apparent as the renewal audio. If I had to guess, I'd say its probably EQ adjustments. Some spots had either less or more variation on certain parts of the waveform, like previously mentioned, making it harder to cut the dead space between 25' and 26'. I originally guess cut 50 extra samples but then in the 5.1 track I found a perfect reference point and only had to end up cutting 30 more samples. As for the TV series episodes, yes, those are indeed different as well. Awhile ago I determined 30 frames at the beginning need to be cut to match JPBD but I have not fully examined with sample counting. Some people were saying the USBD was encoded better than the JPBD. Whether that's true or not, I'm sticking with JPBD since DEATH(true)^2 is zoomed in even more on the USBD so you have even less of an already cropped image plus having the original audio tracks and credits intact for the series makes it worthwhile. Plus DEATH and REBIRTH along with its extras weren't included on international releases. Currently I am not going to be doing anything too major about the rest of the series. At first I was going to replace the ED with the originals but I actually don't mind the replaced audio on those tracks. Plus it differentiates them more from the original Japan audio tracks. Interesting enough the ADV tracks actually look like original PCM master source unlike the Manga Entertainment tracks however levels are kinda whack and I noticed some audio samples are damaged (audible cracks) so it would probably take way too much time and effort to fully restore those. And it's not my rip that broke it. I popped it in my player and sure enough it's like that on disc. The old dub is kinda nostalgic but I'm not too hung up on it. After many years of hearing and learning some Japanese, I am satisfied with listening to the Japanese audio.
Anyways, hopefully this is helpful in case anyone else is interested in the audio.
I may not be able to seed right away nor constantly so the Mega folder should help for now.
