DESCRIPTION
In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

La vicenda è ambientata in un distopico 2145. La razza umana è divisa in due categorie che determinano le prospettive future di ogni individuo.
Se da una parte gli eletti vivono una vita confortevole sulla tecnologica stazione spaziale orbitante Elysium, la maggior parte della popolazione mondiale è costretta a condurre un’esistenza tormentata sul Pianeta Terra, reso poco ospitale dall’inquinamento e dalla sovrappopolazione.
Le leggi che governano le caste sono talmente rigide che ogni clandestino che tenta di raggiungere Elysium è abbattuto senza il minimo rimorso, su ordine del severo ministro Delacourt (Jodie Foster).
Tra coloro che sognano una vita migliore sulla stazione spaziale c’è l’operaio Max De Costa (Matt Damon). Un giorno l’uomo ha un grave incidente, dovuto all’esposizione prolungata ai raggi gamma, ed è costretto ad escogitare un piano per raggiungere Elysium il prima possibile, dal momento che la base dispone di cure mediche avanzate che potrebbero salvarlo da morte certa.
