DESCRIPTION

It is the height of the war in Vietnam, and U.S. Army Captain Willard is sent by Colonel Lucas and a General to carry out a mission that, officially, 'does not exist - nor will it ever exist'. The mission: To seek out a mysterious Green Beret Colonel, Walter Kurtz, whose army has crossed the border into Cambodia and is conducting hit-and-run missions against the Viet Cong and NVA. The army believes Kurtz has gone completely insane and Willard's job is to eliminate him! Willard, sent up the Nung River on a U.S. Navy patrol boat, discovers that his target is one of the most decorated officers in the U.S. Army. His crew meets up with surfer-type Lt-Colonel Kilgore, head of a U.S Army helicopter cavalry group which eliminates a Viet Cong outpost to provide an entry point into the Nung River. After some hair-raising encounters, in which some of his crew are killed, Willard, Lance and Chef reach Colonel Kurtz's outpost, beyond the Do Lung Bridge. Now, after becoming prisoners of Kurtz, will Willard & the others be able to fulfill their mission?

Apocalypse Now è un film del 1979 diretto da Francis Ford Coppola, liberamente ispirato al romanzo di Joseph Conrad, ‘Heart of Darkness’. Il film è ambientato nel 1969, all’apogeo della guerra del Vietnam. Il capitano Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) svolge delicate missioni segrete per la CIA, portate a temine al prezzo della sua stabilità mentale. Poco dopo aver fatto rientro a Saigon, Willard è convocato alla presenza del generale Corman (G.D. Spradlin) e del colonello Lucas (Harrison Ford), che gli assegnano una nuova missione: scovare e uccidere l’americano Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Nel cuore della neutrale Cambogia, il colonnello Kurtz si è autoproclamato capo di un manipolo di sbandati e indigeni della montagna e Willard dovrà infiltrarsi tra i suoi accoliti per porre fine al pericoloso regime del disertore. Stando alle informazioni ricevute, Kurtz è un abile soldato che ha il potere di plagiare chiunque graviti attorno alla sua carismatica persona.
A Willard è assegnato un variegato equipaggio che lo aiuterà a compiere la rischiosa missione. Navigando sul fiume, in prossimità del confine cambogiano, la task force si imbatte nel comandante William ‘Bill’ Kilgore (Robert Duvall). Mentre la loro imbarcazione è trasportata al sicuro, il gruppo assiste dall'alto alle catastrofiche conseguenze dell’attacco militare di Kilgore, che inonda con ingenti quantità di napalm un villaggio di vietcong. Il viaggio dell’equipaggio sarà segnato dalla contemplazione dell’atrocità della guerra, dalla violenza, dalla morte, dalla psicosi e dalla futile ricerca di comprendere il senso ultimo del conflitto in Vietnam. Proprio quando Willard inizia a sospettare che Kurtz non sia una reale minaccia, il gruppo raggiunge il regno del disertore. Qui, centinaia di uomini in stato catatonico contemplano in silenzio la vacuità dell’esistenza, condividendo la terra con una moltitudine dissacrante di corpi esanimi, brutalmente trucidati. Kurtz rivela la sua mistica visione sulla guerra, nata dall'ossessiva lettura di James Frazer, e l’importanza del suo ruolo di Re-Sacerdote. La missione di Willard sarà, così, inevitabilmente legata alla profezia sull'immolazione dell’eletto, ma la malaria non risparmia gli eroi e il catartico sacrificio potrebbe non essere mai consumato…
