John and Laura Baxter are in Venice when they meet a pair of elderly sisters, one of whom claims to be psychic. She insists that she sees the spirit of the Baxters' daughter, who recently drowned. Laura is intrigued, but John resists the idea. He, however, seems to have his own psychic flashes, seeing their daughter walk the streets in her red cloak, as well as Laura and the sisters on a funeral gondola.
Il restauratore John Baxter (Donald Sutherland) si rituffa nel lavoro a Venezia dopo aver patito la morte della figlioletta Christine, dalla quale la moglie Laura (Julie Christie) non è mai riuscita a riprendersi del tutto. Mentre l'altro figlio della coppia, Johnny, viene mandato in collegio, i due coniugi incontrano per caso in un ristorante della laguna veneziana due sorelle, di cui una cieca e sensitiva, la quale afferma di aver percepito con loro due la piccola Christine, con indosso un impermeabile (lo stesso che aveva quando John la trasse ormai esanime dal laghetto vicino casa)....
Anomalo thriller psicologico del 1973, poco conosciuto e penalizzato da un titolo tradotto malamente (è preferibile l'originale Don't Look Now). Celebre anche per una scena di sesso fra Sutherland e la Christie ed un'altra scena in cui l'attore canadese rischiò la vita, A Venezia...Un dicembre rosso shocking è un film teso e visionario, orrorifico e disturbante, ricco di suggestione, continui flashback e profezie medianiche, con un ottimo Sutherland e un raggelante (eccellente) finale.
