-- Original title "Panzer.Macht.Geschichte. Ende einer Jahrhundertwaffe?"; alternative english title "The Tank: Weapon of the 20th Century" --
Filmed just over a century after the first tank battle in 1918, this documentary series explores how the vehicles forever changed warfare.
Tanks are killing machines designed to destroy. Since their invention at the beginning of the 20th century, they have also been a solid element in the omnipotence fantasies of state leaders and dictators. For the past 100 years, they have undoubtedly been the backbone of every land army.
They are considered as a symbol of strength and assertiveness. Hardly any other invention has influenced the history of the 20th century as much as Panzer. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first major tank battle, the documentary is dedicated to two episodes of the steel weapon and undertakes an exciting and multifaceted journey through time into history.
The huge vehicles have long since found their way into global culture - whether as a monument, in films or on billboards. Tanks have made history and have themselves become part of the story. But why were they even developed? How and why did you start triumphant? And, in the face of remotely controlled drones and airborne wars, have they become obsolete?
The history of tanks is diverse! It's a story of technology, psychology, culture - and people.
A Film by Almut Faass and Anja Kindler ; Produced by Spiegel TV for ZDF in Association with ARTE
2) Conflict and Revolt
In 1945, allied soldiers atop tanks were celebrated as liberators. Yet in the Cold War, tanks became the brutal tools of authoritarian regimes. In 1956, Soviet tanks swept over Budapest, Hungary. These machines will symbolize oppression. Nearly twelve years later, Warsaw Pact tanks enter Prague, Czechoslovakia...
This episode shows the development of the tank at the end of the Second World War until today. In the Cold War tanks became brutal tools of authoritarian systems and a symbol of political oppression. In the anti-war movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the tank stood for clinging to old, military and authoritarian structures.
