DESCRIPTION
A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair.
La piccola Benedetta Carlini, figlia di una facoltosa famiglia toscana, entra nel convento di Pescia per intraprendere il percorso monacale. Da sempre propensa ad avere visioni e comunicare direttamente col Cristo, questi episodi sembrano intensificarsi quando conosce la giovane Bartolomea, umile popolana entrata in convento per fuggire le angherie della propria famiglia, della quale si invaghisce. I prodigi vissuti da Benedetta la faranno nominare badessa del monastero e venerare come mistica, ma ben presto la sua figura finirà sotto accusa di blasfemia e saffismo, mentre nel resto del paese imperversa la peste.
