The Undertones were a melodic pop punk band formed in 1977 from Derry, Northern Ireland that did not reflect the political and social tensions then prevailing in Ulster. She made history with the hit Teenage Kicks (1978), which became one of John Peel's favorite tracks and thus gave the band instant fame. After the release of their debut album, The Undertones held an American tour in conjunction with The Clash. As the band's music became more complex (wind instruments, slide guitar, xylophone were used in the third album), its popularity fell. In 1983, after a series of summer festival concerts, The Undertones disbanded. Feargal Sharkey (born August 13, 1958 in Derry, Northern Ireland) launched an (at first very successful) solo career, and the O'Neill brothers formed That Petrol Emotion, a very different kind of band that played hard experimental alternative rock and had a keen interest in current policy. The 1999 reunion was carried out without Sharkey; he was replaced by Paul McLoon. After this change in vocalist, the band released 2 more albums Get What You Need (2003) and Dig Yourself Deep (2007).
