VM Video Music, italian independent television (seeded audio only)
Excellent SBD recording
SBD > BetaCam (FM audio channels used) > BetaCam editing > TV broadcast > TV receiver > Sony U-Matic High Band 3/4" > Fuji Metal Tape > Terratec DMX6Fire24/96 > WAV > SoundForge 5 > dBpowerAMP > FLAC
Something strange happened at the beginning of "Forgotten Sons", the sound engineer taken a moment of madness, he mistaken all instruments levels directed to TV. This give us a nice, strange and unusual version of "Forgotten Sons" with high percussions volume and low levels for bass, guitar and keyboards. This happened for the TV recording only and not for the audience in the Arena.
"Market Square Heroes" was faded out just before it's natural end.
Two small NON-SYNC Video pitch gap in "Misplaced Childhood" at 18.54 and "Fugazi" at 7.47
I love this concert for many reasons. It was the 1st time Marillion went in Italy (they played the 1st concert in Milano at The Rolling Stones the day before), Kayleigh and Misplaced Childhood was not issued in Italy before that day (but 3 days after the concert) so they were not still famous, just their few real fans knew them and had brought the english version of both album and single, I was one of them and that was the 1st time i've seen Marillion on stage.
Their lack of success in Italy forced Marillion to play in the Arena Puccini... do you thought at Verona's Arena? no, forget it! When we arrived in Bologna nobody knew say us were to find the Arena Puccini, after dozen attempts an old woman exclaimed "Ahhh, must be the railway recreational club" (we found later the concert poster were this was written but none poster was placed in Bologna because all posters was ripped and saled at the Arena gates). Well that was the Arena Puccini, or better, really an "open air cinema" with about 400500 chairs (see the pics).
The concert was incredibly recorded with 3 betacam cameras for the "free" Video Music a young and independent television who tried to fight the monopoly of national RAI and private Fininvest (now Mediaset) networks, but they lost the battle. Fish wrong and call them MTV along the concert and he was a prophet because about 2 years later just MTV brought Video Music or better, his frequencies. Video Music died and so his archive of concerts. Before to die VM transmitted part of the Marillion concert (55 minutes) for no more of 50% of italians (not the full country was covered by VM signal), so the video version is not complete.
Few months later the italian ARC (Alternative Recording Company) label issued a single vinyl bootleg called "Incubus" (ARC 0086), an audience recording with very good quality but again, a not complete performance.
Last, i've thought to the suicide when my little walkman Aiwa died in a mess of recording tape, I've saved another part of concert but again not complete.
Fish and the band were happy to play for us and we were very happy to being there. Before to finish Fish promise to return in October and he maintained its promise, Marillion returned three months later, this time after the Kaileigh success... only three months later they was famous in Italy and played for thousands peoples at every concert... but this is another story, another seed (soon their concert in Scandicci, near Florence, on October 23).
Well, here i've tried to rebuild this fantastic performance from these three different sources but I've not found the 1st track "assassing", the first part of "Cinderella Search" and the conclusive seconds of "Market Square Heroes" faded out by VM.
Legends tell me of a complete tape in the trade circuit but i've never seen it so i've decided to share what I have. I hope Marillion fans can however appreciate this last date of their Misplaced Childhood summer european tour.
I've made some photos at the concert you can use them FREELY as you prefer.
