NOTES:
The final Rush gig in my vaults...the end of the road - a sad day indeed. No more Rush tapes to make...or post. Unless....nah.
This writeup is long and the show is probably not worthly (FUCKING BUZZ) but I had to explain the history and some of the personal
experiences at the show and beyond...
The Family gig...had the usual crew with me - Jim, Kim, Gary, Kevin and Mike - and it was a great show all things considered. We
had a major thunder storm roll in during the drive down and nearly washed us away in Berkley Springs WV but we made it thru...a foot
of water in the road at times - nuts. Thunderheads were definately rumbling...and thus a perfect title. I nearly got a speeding ticket
in the same town coming home late after the show but the cop let me off. Maybe he was a Rush fan. The speed thru there is 25 and its crap
and I wasn't paying attention. Thanks to you whoever you are! I wasn't drinking, never do for shows like this. I had 3 separate pairs of
tickets and the ones I used were dead in line with PA system. Great to meet up with Necro and Mr. and Mrs. KG in the parking lot
prior to the show - really miss the Rush get togethers. Al had some guitar issues at times, more than usual - during 2112, early in the
Overture it just went "out of tune" or something - just stopped working properly...so he switched it out for the gold Les Paul and played
that til the beginning of the Temples (its pretty cool hearing just GED and Neil bang away without any distorted guitar btw) at which point
he got his Sunburst back - he then ripped thru the rest of the song with a fucking vengence. They had a minor train wreck in DEW also, I
think due to Neil being "lost" in the song, as well as Natural Science, he missed the big fill in the middle, just continued to play
the ride cymbal/snare. Neil was definately off part of the night and for good reason. He later revealed in one of his blog posts that he was
sick at this show, nausea and flu symtoms plus foot problems...probably biked thru that fucking rain storm the day of and was probably
sick from the rain in prior days. His feet in major pain/fungus. Biking in the rain and all sorts of weather will do that. I know it was the
only way he could cope with touring but it was not smart and it was partially why he wanted to be done forever. I guess if you are gonna torture
your body day AND night, I'm not suprised he felt "done" with it all. They all needed the upcoming break I guess. There are very strong parts
of the show for sure and mostly it was a very good performance overall. Jacob's Ladder was nailed and sounds great as usual and the majority of
the second set is very good (those tunes!!!), including 2112, as the last half of that song is killer..."Presentation" is the best of the tour IMO,
Al is FUCKING SHREDDING IT and Ged's vocal is so good there, the tempo of it was perfect!!! The whole Encore was smoked as well!! I was pretty
lucky the tour dates fell the way they did, since I was able to attend this show and the first two shows of the second leg (Columbus and Buffalo)
and I thus got to see setlists A, B and C back to back to back (actual order was C, A and then B) with Set B still my favorite by a hair over
Set C (except when they played Losing It in Toronto on Night 2 - which is my favorite set of them all - a modified B/C setlist and even better since
I WAS THERE and we got the official live video of it!!). My brother Kevin wanted the "A" setlist, even though he didn't know it at the time -> RED
BARCHETTA is his favorite song and he immediately lets me know that fact at the end of the show! :) I left our end of show discussion in, mostly
for posterity and since the Polka was playing in the background. I did honestly think they sounded good that night except for the obvious mistakes
and technical issues, which are sometimes out of their control. I actually think Neil played strong for most of the night and definately towards
the end and really snapped out of it after his last hiccup in Natural Science.
Ok, a few words on the mastering and why it took so long to release this. The raw show had an annoying buzz in the right channel. Still does. :(
This, I think, due to the rain after the Tulsa show - my mics got a little wet and I failed to dry them properly, ya that was a long time between
gigs but that is the only thing I can think of. I pulled the caps off after this show and aired everything out and they seemed to work fine after
that so who knows. With headphones, the buzz is noticeable unfortunately and more so in the quiet parts. I thought it came and went but I think
its there the entire show underlying everything, it just varies in how loud it gets. Listening on a good set of speakers, its not entirely noticable
at most times but this show is overall "bright" so that may bring it out a bit more. After being throughly depressed upon listening to the show
I still wanted it mastered so I drafted my good Rush bud rn (TRICKY), who had mastered some of my recent Rush gigs and others. He started the
mastering in a couple different ways, but what he was trying to do to eliminate the noise was not working for me and within a couple months
I just shelved it. In the mean time, rn was killed senselessly in a car accident when he was assisting a disabled vehicle in the middle of a highway
at 4am on Memorial Day and was run into by a very careless driver who got jack dick for it even though she didn't have a valid drivers license at
the time she killed him. And again, how fucked up is this world? Truely? The guy was so generous and it got him killed in the end. It's a shame.
Life is fucking cruel, make no mistake. He was trying to ditch the right channel completely and go with a clone of the left on both sides and then
pump in some reverb/delay, etc. to make it sound more like a stereo recording (not sure what he was doing exactly). In the end, it didn't sound
that great to me, not clear and very swooshy, but it wasn't his fault really, its just hard to accomplish something like this. I really hated to
ditch his effort but it just wasn't sounding right.
Sometime after rn passed away, I decided to finally revisit this in the hopes of finding a solution to this buzzing as I realized it was my final
Rush show I had yet to master and release. I was fortuneate to find someone else to take a crack at both the stereo and left only versions, sidewindersf,
and after a good bit of back and forth with both versions (stereo and left only), I finally settled on the stereo version. So here you have it, warts,
noise and all, the stereo version -> the last Rush gig I taped not in the wild.
So a BIG thanks to sidewindersf, he was patient with my suggestions and I think he nailed this one for what it could provide us. It was
not a great raw show to start with but he made it punchy and clear in comparison and I think this one is actually very good on balance, even
with the buzz. It's a tiny bit bright but that helps with the guitar and vocal and makes the bass drum thump cleanly I think.
Thankfully, me and rn got the artwork pretty much done back in 2015 - well him really, all I did was make a suggestion or two and say
"HELL ya, looks great!" Initially he only had completed a disc 1 panel but I had another DIMER help with the others, The Pied Piper, who made
up a Disc 2 and 3 panels for me so -> THANK YOU PIPER MAN!!! The front, tray and back were done way back when and I'm including all three
versions rn did just because I can. My personal preference is #3 btw.
Lastly, I won't repeat what I said about the band and their retirement (see my Tampa show notes I posted) but I am hoping for a GED and Al
reunion somehow even though Al is teamed up with a drummer that doesn't really fit the two of them IMO. However, anything is possible I guess
and I'm hoping it works out. Ged recently said they would make noise again together so its logical that we could see them do some dates
if new music surfaces, and ya, this won't be a Rush Project but something else. The Q&A coming up at the R&R Hall will shed some light hopefully.
Happy New Year everyone!
There are no fades in the tracks. Logical burning is Set I, Set II and Encore.
Repost if you want - please just keep info and file set intact. No MODS/Matrixes please unless approved (which is unlikely in this case anyway).
