Giovanni è un regista sempre meno in sintonia con il mondo che lo circonda. Al momento è impegnato con le riprese di un film ambientato nel 1956, la storia del segretario della sezione del partito comunista di un quartiere romano che non sa come reagire all'invio dei carri armati sovietici in Ungheria. La produttrice del film è sua moglie Paola, che ultimamente sta pensando di lasciarlo anche se Giovanni non ne ha idea. Il regista sta anche scrivendo un altro progetto tratto da un romanzo e allo stesso tempo sogna di girare un film che racconti la storia d'amore quarantennale di una coppia, con molte canzoni italiane a fare da sottofondo.
