Una donna di mezza età, con un matrimonio di venticinque anni sulle spalle e una vita sempre uguale avrebbe il destino segnato nel cinema italiano, e con grande probabilità sarebbe tutto tranne che protagonista. I francesi Lauriane Escaffre e Yvonnick Muller scelgono invece Karin Viard, già applaudita in La famiglia Bélier, per affidarle il complesso ruolo di Maria, donna delle pulizie dalla sensibilità fuori dall'ordinario. Appassionata di scrittura, la incontriamo a casa di una cliente, nel bel mezzo di una veglia funebre, in attesa di una riassegnazione. La invieranno alla Scuola di Belle Arti a Parigi, universo a lei completamente sconosciuto. Dovrà imparare che esistono opere d'arte bizzarre (di simil burro, da non gettare nella spazzatura) e che ci sono studenti creativi da poter aiutare. Come? Attraverso le sue mani, il suo saper fare, ma anche il suo corpo.
