Un maniaco terrorizza Londra, strangolando le donne con una cravatta. Per una serie di sfortunate coincidenze, i primi sospetti cadono su Richard Blaney, un ex-aviatore della RAF, che vive di lavori saltuari e ha un debole per l'alcool. L'ultima vittima del serial killer è infatti la sua ex-moglie, Brenda Blaney, che gestisce un'agenzia matrimoniale. È stato visto allontanarsi dall'agenzia poco prima della scoperta del cadavere e la segretaria di Brenda testimonia di un violento litigio intercorso fra i due. Braccato dalla polizia, Richard si nasconde con l'aiuto della compagna Barbara ("Babs"), cameriera nel pub in cui lavora saltuariamente.....
