Film diretto da Marc Forster, racconta la storia di Julian (Bryce Gheisar), un bambino un po' arrogante, che a scuola ha la fama di essere un bullo, tanto da prendere di mira chiunque veda come "diverso". A causa di questo suo carattere, il ragazzo viene anche sospeso da scuola. L'estate dopo questa esperienza, Julian trascorre le vacanze a Parigi dalla nonna (Helen Mirren), che durante un caldo pomeriggio gli racconta una storia: come da ragazza sia riuscita a scappare ai nazisti nel corso della Seconda guerra mondiale. La nonna era una giovane ebrea, che viveva nella Francia occupata dalle truppe di Hitler. Ad aiutarla a salvarsi è stato un suo coetaneo, un giovane di nome Julian, proprio come suo nipote, che, nonostante soffrisse di deformità alle gambe, è riuscito a compiere un gesto che lo ha reso un vero eroe.
