At the venerable Village Vanguard, Kris Davis plays piano, prepared piano and “artura microfreak synthesizer” along with Terri Lyne Carrington/drd, Julian Lage/g, Trevor Dunn/b and Val Jeanty on turntables and electronics for an evening of mixing post bop jazz with free form noodles. Tapes that create dots and dashes dominate “The Dancer” while forming backgrouns, foregrounds and general wallpaper for the loose and subdued work by Lage and Davis on “Endless Columns”. There is a three part “Bird Suite” that mixes intuitive meanderings, tapes and recordings with jazzy jams and extrapolated solos. The team is more lyrical on the blue “Brainfeel” with some edgy bowing by Dunn and ruminations by Lage on “ Nine Hats”. Did anthing stick to the walls?
