On July 2nd, communications systems worldwide are sent into chaos by a strange atmospheric interference. It is soon learned by the military that a number of enormous objects are on a collision course with Earth. At first thought to be meteors, they are later revealed to be gigantic spacecraft, piloted by a mysterious alien species. After attempts to communicate with the aliens go nowhere, David Levinson, an ex-scientist turned cable technician, discovers that the aliens are going to attack major points around the globe in less than a day....

Mancano pochi giorni alle celebrazioni del Giorno dell'Indipendenza, quando, improvvisamente, il cielo su Washington è oscurato da una gigantesca astronave di provenienza sconosciuta. Il governo degli Stati Uniti e l'opinione pubblica si interrogano sulle intenzioni dei visitatori dividendosi tra un fronte ostile ed un'ala pacifista. Contemporaneamente, nell'etere viene captato un misterioso segnale: è, come scopre David Levison (Jeff Goldblum), un conto alla rovescia che annuncia un'aggressione senza precedenti contro la Terra. Il giovane presidente Thomas J. Whitmore riesce a salvarsi in extremis, ma la Casa Bianca è polverizzata. La città è bombardata e a nulla valgono le difese dei militari, bomba atomica compresa. La svolta avviene quando il pilota Steven Hiller (Will Smith) cattura un alieno e lo trasporta al centro di ricerche "Area 51" dove è gelosamente custodito il disco volante di "Roswell" precipitato nel 1947.
