*Tenjou Hen: Utsu no Miko* is a well-known OVA series from 1990 to 1992. Much less well known is the prequel movie from 1989, simply titled *Utsu no Miko* (*Prince of the Sky*, although there is no agreed English translation of the title). It tells the origin story of the horned boy known as Utsu no Miko and without it, the OVA series is difficult to understand.
Utsu no Miko is a semi-divine creature (hence the horn), the son of the god of the northern sky. He becomes an *oni* (demon), a fighting monk from the ascetic community on Mount Kongo, led by Master Ozuna. Miko and his colleagues attempt to defend the common people from the depredations of the Imperial government, led by the sinister and sneering Fujiwara no Fuhito. Along the way, Miko encounters bandits (and the bandit leader's sister, the lovely Tatarame), attempts to assassinate Fujiwara, fights evil spirits and tames a fallen god, tries to set up a utopian kingdom for the landless peasantry, and meets the enigmatic and lovely Kagame, the Moon Princess (yeah, *that* one). At the end, he concludes he needs the powers of a god and decides to go to the Heavenly Realm. Cue the OVAs.
