Writing about the postwar United States, Kaja Silverman has argued that Hollywood films from the late 1940s attest to a crisis of masculinity occasioned by the historical trauma of World War II. According to Silverman’s influential psychoanalytic reading, certain historical moments mark a collapse of the phallic authority that normally compensates for the fundamental lack or castration of all (male) subjects. At these moments of historical trauma, there is a loss of collective belief in ideal masculinity (usually figured by the equation of the phallus with the penis), as well as a concomitant loss of belief in the “dominant fiction” that underpins and sustains all social formations.
