Note : We're back, and with a very new film, it's the year's best horror movie so far for me, an auteur tour de force from Ryan Coogler, making both a kick-ass vampire movie, a highly political film about assimilation, exploitation, and cultural heritage, and also in some amazing way a musical. It's the biggest swing I've seen in a film in a good long while, and it's near magical that it works so well. The excellent cast includes Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, well into movie star leading man territory by now, as well as Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, Yao, and blues legend Buddy Guy.
Identical twins "Smoke" and "Stack" Moore, WWI veterans who spent some time working for the Chicago mob, return to their small Mississippi home town to go legit, purchasing an old saw mill to open a juke joint. Their younger cousin Sammie, a talented guitarist, joins them, although his preacher father thinks secular music is of the devil. The group meets several old acquaintances, including Stack's white-passing ex Mary, who he abandoned for her own safety, alcoholic musician Delta Slim, Chinese shop keepers Grace and Bo Chow, field worker Cornbread, and Smoke's estranged wife Annie, all of whom they recruit to help out with the new business in some way. However, Irish immigrant Remmick, who's fleeing from a group of Choctaw, finds refuge in the house of a couple of Klan members, and promptly turns them into vampires just like him. At the juke joint's opening night, Sammie's performance transcends space and time, summing musical spirits from the past and the future, which attracts the attention of the vampires, who want to be allowed entry into the party. As the twins are suspicious, they leave, but soon return to set off a confrontation between the creators of an ancestral culture and the bloodsucking hive-mind who want to feed off of it.
A perfect Blu-Ray master from source material shot on film, but meticulously treated in digital post, there's nothing to complain about here. The cinematography is extremely dark, but very pretty, and although I'm not personally a fan of the repeated aspect ratio changes recently popular in films partially shot on IMAX, it all looks immaculate. Sound, very important, of course, is similarly immaculate, and we've got a plethora of subtitles. Sadly, no commentary tracks, which, judging by interviews I've read with Coogler, would have been very interesting.
