La trama riportata è riferita alle versioni Director's cut del 1992 e Final Cut del 2007, entrambe avallate da Ridley Scott. Nella versione originale del 1982 era presente la voce narrante fuori campo di Harrison Ford, eliminata in quelle successive, che presentano anche l'aggiunta di alcune sequenze e un diverso finale. In una Los Angeles distopica dell'anno 2019, la tecnologia ha permesso la creazione di androidi sintetici del tutto simili agli esseri umani, detti "replicanti", utilizzati per svolgere i lavori più umili e faticosi, dotati di capacità intellettuali e forza fisica superiori agli uomini, ma con una longevità limitata a quattro anni. Sei replicanti del modello più evoluto (tre femmine e tre maschi), capitanati da Roy Batty, sono fuggiti dalle colonie extramondo, dove lavoravano, e, giunti furtivamente a Los Angeles, hanno cercato di introdursi nella Tyrell Corporation, l'azienda dove erano stati creati, allo scopo di far togliere il limite di durata delle loro vite. Due di loro (un maschio e una femmina) sono finiti in un campo elettrico rimanendo folgorati, mentre Roy Batty e gli altri tre sono fuggiti. Uno di loro, Leon, è stato individuato tra i candidati in cerca di lavoro alla Tyrell, ma è riuscito a scappare sparando all'agente Holden, che lo stava sottoponendo a un test per il riconoscimento dei replicanti.

In 2019 Los Angeles, former police officer Rick Deckard is detained by Officer Gaff, who likes to make origami figures, and is brought to his former supervisor, Bryant. Deckard, whose job as a "blade runner" was to track down bioengineered humanoids known as replicants and terminally "retire" them, is informed that four replicants are on Earth illegally. Deckard begins to leave, but Bryant makes veiled threats and Deckard stays. The two watch a video of a blade runner named Holden administering the Voight-Kampff test, which is designed to distinguish replicants from humans based on their emotional responses to questions. The test subject, Leon, shoots Holden on the second question. Bryant wants Deckard to retire Leon and three other Nexus-6 replicants: Roy Batty, Zhora, and Pris.
