Autunno 1943. La giovane Rosa, in fuga da Berlino colpita dai bombardamenti, raggiunge un piccolo paese isolato vicino al confine orientale. Qui è dove vivono i suoceri e dove il marito, impegnato al fronte, le ha scritto di rifugiarsi in attesa del suo ritorno. Rosa scopre subito che il villaggio, apparentemente tranquillo, nasconde un segreto: all’interno della foresta con cui confina, Hitler ha il suo quartier generale, la Tana del Lupo. Il Führer vede nemici dappertutto, essere avvelenato è la sua ossessione. Una mattina all’alba Rosa viene prelevata, assieme ad altre giovani donne del villaggio, per assaggiare i cibi cucinati per lui. Divise tra la paura di morire e la fame, le assaggiatrici stringeranno tra loro alleanze, amicizie e patti segreti.
