**Release Notes:**
> This is a **proof of concept** release for the extent to which the new CCC Crunchyroll subtitles could be improved with automation/minimal effort. **It is not a guarantee for me releasing any future episodes of this, or any other Crunchyroll show.**
Background: Keep in mind that a lot of this is speculation. Recently, Crunchyroll have seen a very noticeable downgrade on some shows which have Closed Caption Converter at the top of the script. These use the TTML which Crunchyroll uses on Amazon, Youtube, etc., mindlessly converted back into simple .ass. This means that there is only ever one subtitle event on screen at a time so no positional typesetting meaning much of on screen text is not translated. Overlapping speakers are also combined in double dash - lines, providing for a very bad viewing experience at times where fast dialogue is difficult to follow. They also follow the standard of 2 frame gaps between subtitle lines, causing flickering lines.
You may have also seen that CR has updated some of their subs back to the old format, this is because in most cases, they have the aegisub version with all the typesetting and quality as before but choose not deliver it. It is suspected that this is an intentional transition to standardize to the lower quality but "Industry standard" subtitle format which theoretically would be much simpler for CR. However, they provide for a very bad viewing experience in anime where there are lots of on-screen text. If CR transitions away from aegisub entirely, you can expect the quality to drop even further.
Ideally, you would get a whole fansubbing team to retime and edit, etc. but this is from the perspective of a hands-off approach with automation scripts. So here's what can be done:
- Restyling, as always. It's even easier now!
- The 2 frame gaps can be fixed with a simple timing post processor but the overlapping speakers and double dash - lines can't be meaningfully split without a manual hands-on retime. A program like AndryOut's AutoSubReTimer may help with a manual speed low-effot retime.
- Signs which are stacked on top of dialogue can be split apart and sent to the top, however, their timing will still not perfect and it doesn't help when dialogue is cut short to show a sign.
- Lack of positional typesetting can be helped by adding Bilibili ASS typesetting, yes they do ASS typesetting but it is usually a few days late and obviously uses a different translation. Therefore I would be reluctant to remove the CR signs entirely. Instead you can just refer to the Bilibili TS if there is nothing else.
The first 3 fixes are obvious enough but the point of this release was mostly to showcase how including Bilibili typesetting could be helpful for filling in gaps in translation of signs. Also I'm hoping that maybe someone will re-rip and post them to nyaa when they are available. Otherwise, it is very easy for you to get them yourselves. Will people have the patience to wait a few days for not even a fansub but just Bili TS? Maybe not, but could be something to consider for finished shows.
About this episode specifically, there was actually a slightly updated, but still CCC, version of the CR subtitles with a couple small timing fixes, which I ripped. The underlying timing quality still seems good and I figure this episode was still made in aegisub and the original sub file is out there somewhere but not shown. There are a couple of signs in the episodes itself but you can also see the difference between CR and Bili translations and why you want to keep the CR sign on screen for consistency in terminology. There were also a few untranslated signs in CR but the bulk are in the last 15 minutes or so which is an out-of-show real life food review segment where Bili TS helped fill in some missing translations.
