His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977) is the revered founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He arrived in the United States in 1965 at an advanced age and within twelve years ignited a global spiritual movement centered on the practice of bhakti-yoga.
Core Contents of His Talks and Teachings:
Prabhupada’s discourses, drawn from ancient Vedic scriptures like the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, presented a coherent and challenging worldview:
The Self is Eternal: The primary subject is that the living being is an eternal soul (atma), distinct from the temporary material body. The soul’s constitutional position is to be a loving servant of the Supreme Soul, Krishna.
Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead: He emphatically taught that Krishna is not a mythological figure or a symbol, but the origin of all divine manifestations and the ultimate object of devotion. Real spiritual life begins with accepting Krishna as the supreme enjoyer and proprietor of all that exists.
The Science of Bhakti-Yoga: He presented devotion (bhakti) as a precise, practical science for reawakening the soul’s relationship with God. The core practice is the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, which he called the most effective means of spiritual realization in the current age.
Critique of Materialism: His talks consistently identified sense gratification, egoism, and atheistic philosophies as the root causes of suffering. He described the modern world as entrapped in a dangerous illusion (maya) of identifying solely with the body and its designations (race, nationality, etc.).
Karma and Reincarnation: He explained the natural law of karma (action and reaction) and reincarnation as the mechanism by which the soul transmigrates, receiving new material bodies based on past desires and activities. The goal of human life is to break this cycle.
Simple Living and High Thinking: He advocated for a culture based on agrarian self-sufficiency, God-consciousness, and regulated principles—including vegetarianism, no intoxication, no gambling, and no illicit sex—as the foundation for a peaceful mind and society.
In essence, Prabhupada’s message was a call for a radical shift in consciousness: from a life centered on material consumption to one of devotional service, aiming not for mundane reform but for the ultimate liberation of the soul and a return to the spiritual realm.
