A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.

TRAMA
Il nostro pianeta è stato invaso da una razza aliena di Anime, che hanno preso definitivamente possesso dei corpi dei terrestri. Il mondo è diventato pacifico, pulito, sono scomparse le malattie e i crimini, ma anche la quasi totalità degli esseri umani. I sopravvissuti vivono in clandestinità nel deserto. La giovane Melanie sta per raggiungerli, quando viene catturata da una "cercatrice". Nel suo corpo prende posto un'anima chiamata Wanderer. L'amore di Melanie per il fidanzato Jared e per il fratellino Ian, però, è talmente forte che la sua voce non si lascia mettere a tacere e resiste nella mente di Wanderer, spingendola ad unirsi ai ribelli.
La fonte letteraria di The Host, com'è noto, è il romanzo omonimo di Stephenie Meyer e il film, nel bene e nel male, porta la stessa firma. Andrew Niccol pare limitarsi a ripetere gli errori di In time: innanzitutto restando in superficie su un soggetto che di spunti da offrire ne avrebbe avuti e sembrava anzi richiedere a gran voce l'intervento di un regista che volesse esplorarli con i mezzi del cinema, e in secondo luogo preoccupandosi di patinare un universo che non ha mai veramente costruito (visivamente e ideologicamente), così da farlo risuonare fastidiosamente vuoto.
Eppure la materia c'era. Per quanto lontana dalla fantascienza più sofisticata, l'idea che gli alieni all'interno del nostro stesso corpo possiamo essere proprio noi, la nostra coscienza umana con le sue pulsioni politicamente scorrette, è suggestiva quanto basta, come un caso di veglia in sede di anestesia totale. Solo che qui dura troppo poco. Non solo l'espediente di affidare a Melanie la voice over (interiore), costringendo la sua coinquilina a parlare da sola, non regge la durata del lungometraggio senza farsi ridicola, ma ben presto l'inquietudine fantascientifica lascia il posto al melodramma sguaiato. Anche in questo caso, in fondo, il danno è il modo. Nella vicenda folle di due donne in una, che amano due uomini diversi, un altro cinema, più delicato e analitico, avrebbe potuto alludere all'umana schizofrenia tra amore e desiderio, passione e ragione, invece The Host sceglie la via del calco tematico di Twilight, e dunque il triangolo (mascherato da quadrato impossibile), i finti pudori (con il terzo incomodo che si rifugia in nome della privacy "nell'altra stanza" della mente...), le "trasformazioni" in punto di morte. Rimane inoltre il mistero di una campagna promozionale che vorrebbe libro e film "per adulti" quando sono entrambi popolati di ventenni, in perfetta e non certo casuale continuità con i fortunati e vampireschi precedenti.
