Michael Connelly besloot schrijver te worden toen hij Raymond Chandler ontdekt had. Daarom studeerde hij journalistiek en creative writing. Vanaf 1980 was hij misdaadverslaggever in Florida, tijdens de geweldsgolf die veroorzaakt werd door de Cocaïne Wars. In 1986 schreef hij met twee anderen een artikel over de overlevenden van een vliegtuigcrash, dat de shortlist van de Pulitzer Prize haalde. Hierdoor werd hij aangenomen bij
de Los Angeles Times en verhuisde hij naar de stad van Chandler. Na drie jaar in L.A. begon hij te schrijven over LAPD-rechercheur Hieronymus Bosch. The Black Echo verscheen in 1992 en won een Edgar Award.
