In het jaar 198 voor Christus trekt Cao Cao, de eerste minister van de Han-dynastie, naar het oosten en verslaat de grootste krijger van China, Lv Bu. Hiermee boezemt hij elke ambitieuze krijger van het land angst in. Jaren later kroont hij zichzelf tot koning van Wei en de geruchten gaan dat hij de keizer zal vervangen. Ondertussen zijn de twee geliefden Mu Shun en Ling Jv vanuit een gevangenenkamp overgebracht naar een verborgen graftombe, waar ze vijf jaar lang opgeleid worden tot moordenaars in verband met een geheime missie.
