DESCRIPTION
'Tula, The Revolt' is an international English spoken feature length movie about the leader of the big slave uprising on the island of Curacao, a Dutch colony in 1795. 'Tula The Revolt' tells the true story of a man who dared to stand up against his oppressors leading his people in a peaceful march for freedom, equality and brotherhood. An action movie, but at the same time a character movie, giving the audience the insights of a reluctant leader, his hopes, his fears, his values, his love, his faith, but also his inevitable destiny.

Film over de leider van de grootste slavenopstand op het eiland Curaçao in
1795, dat destijds een Nederlandse kolonie was. Tula (Obi Abili), een slaaf op
het eiland Curaçao, wordt zich steeds bewuster van de ongelijkheid tussen zijn
volk en hun blanke onderdrukkers. Als hij van zijn geliefde Speranza
(Natalie Simpson) verneemt dat de slavernij op Haïti is afgeschaft, pleit hij
voor vrijheid en gelijkheid tussen zwart en wit. Tula krijgt echter geen gehoor
bij zijn ‘plantage-eigenaar’ Van Uytrecht (Jeroen Willems) maar wel bij zijn
eigen volk die geïnspireerd door zijn wilskracht, het werk neerlegt en zich bij
hem aansluit. Als het nieuws van de oproer Gouverneur De Veer (Jeroen Krabbé)
bereikt, stuurt deze Nederlandse troepen onder leiding van kapitein Van
Westerholt (Derek de Lint) naar de plantage. Tula die tegen wil en dank
uitgegroeid is tot leider van de opstand, wil met woorden tot een vreedzame
oplossing komen. Hij beseft al snel dat hij dit idealistische idee moet laten
varen om samen met de andere slaven te vechten voor vrijheid, gelijkheid, en
broederschap.
