Joe Doucett è un pubblicitario alcolizzato e in declino, che una notte viene misteriosamente rapito e rinchiuso in una stanza d'albergo. La prigionia dura vent'anni, durante i quali il malcapitato viene accusato del brutale omicidio della moglie, si racconta alla figlia attraverso centinaia di lettere, cerca nel proprio passato alla ricerca della persona che potrebbe odiarlo a tal punto da aver progettato tutto questo. Uscito dalla stanza, non sfugge però al ricatto del suo rapitore, il quale lo pone di fronte ad un'ultima sfida: la liberazione in cambio della soluzione dell'enigma legato alla sua identità.
Spike Lee torna al manga di Garon Tsuchiya e Nobuaki Minegishi che ha ispirato il successo del film originale firmato Park ChanWook, capitolo secondo e meno entusiasmante della cosiddetta trilogia della vendetta.
