Trama:
Il film inizia con l' esperienza misteriosa di Joe Doucett, un dirigente pubblicitario in declino e padre assente, che una notte, ubriaco, viene rapito dal nulla e costretto in un terribile e noioso isolamento all'interno di un bizzarro motel- che diventerà la sua prigione per 20 anni: 20 anni pieni di tormento, che passano senza alcuna indicazione riguardo l' identità o il movente del suo rapitore. Inspiegabilmente liberato dal suo incubo, Joe torna alla vita di tutti i giorni con una sola ossessione: scoprire la persona che ha orchestrato la sua punizione - e capirne urgentemente il perché. Ma anche se ora è fisicamente libero, si sente ancora perseguitato, coinvolto in una rete di cospirazione e di rivalsa che rischia di risucchiarlo. Durante la ricerca alle sue risposte, incontra una giovane assistente sociale, ed un uomo piuttosto sfuggente, che presumibilmente possiede la chiave della sua liberazione.
