DESCRIPTION
A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. In the original novel, this chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people. In the film version, however, the Triffids are not experimental plants. Instead they are space aliens whose spores have arrived in an earlier meteor shower.

Triffids zijn genetisch gemanipuleerde planten die op grote schaal gekweekt worden omdat deze planten een nieuw soort olie produceren die gebruikt kan worden als brandstof.
Maar dat is niet het enige, de planten lijken te communiceren met elkaar.
Bill Masen (Dougray Scott) is de eerste die deze eigenschap ontdekt bij de Triffids.
Terwijl hij in het ziekenhuis verblijft, herstellend van een oogoperatie, is de hele wereld getuige van een prachtig kosmisch verschijnsel: een meteorenzwerm scheert rakelings langs de aarde.
Helaas is er een afschuwelijke bijwerking: de volgende morgen blijkt iedereen die het schouwspel bewonderde blind te zijn!
De wereld vervalt in chaos en paniek, de Triffids invasie komt op gang, niemand in de stad is nog veilig.
