DESCRIPTION
As Frank Sinatra rings in a new year in the grand ballroom of Miami Beach's most luxurious dream palace - the Miramar Hotel - its visionary leader, Ike Evans, must deal with the Mob, his complicated family and a city in the midst of dramatic change as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba, just 200 miles offshore. By day the hotel at the center of 'Magic City' is all diving clown acts and cha-cha lessons by the pool, but at night Miami Beach reveals a darker truth. Dopers, dealers, strippers, gangsters and those who arrest them drift together to hear the top nightclub acts perform. Just beneath the surface, racial tensions stir. Ike must deal with all of this, even while global intrigue is brewing right under his roof.

Miami, Florida, 31 dicembre 1958: manca pochissimo alla notte di capodanno, e tutto è pronto per la mega festa che si terrà al prestigioso hotel Miramar Playa di proprietà di Isaac “Ike” Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), sposato con la bellissima ex ballerina Vera Cruz (Olga Kurylenko).
Ci sarà addirittura la star del momento, Frank Sinatra, e gli ospiti arriveranno senza dubbio numerosi. O almeno, questo è quello che spera Ike, perché l’albergo non sta vivendo il momento migliore della sua breve esistenza, e un party in grande stile potrebbe decisamente risollevarne le sorti.
C’è però un piccolo problema: i dipendenti hanno improvvisamente deciso di scioperare e chiedono a gran voce un aumento del salario e orari di lavoro ridotti. A guidarli è Mike Strauss (Leland Orser), amico di Ike ma a capo dei sindacati.
Svanito ogni tentativo di convincere pacificamente Strauss a rimandare lo sciopero di sole ventiquattro ore, a Ike non rimane che un’unica alternativa: dovrà chiedere nuovamente aiuto al pericoloso boss Ben Diamond (Danny Huston).
Un uomo che sarebbe meglio evitare a ogni costo. Lo stesso uomo con cui Ike è già indebitato, perché è grazie a lui se è riuscito a raccogliere la somma necessaria per costruire il Miramar Playa, sorto su un terreno di proprietà della prima moglie del protagonista, Molly, morta da ormai alcuni anni.
E’ insieme a lei che Ike ha avuto tre figli: il maggiore Stevie (Steven Strait), il “bad boy” della famiglia, che lavora al bancone del bar sotterraneo Atlantis e che perderà la testa per la donna sbagliata nel momento sbagliato; il quasi ventenne Danny (Christian Cooke), l’opposto del fratello e del padre, innamorato perso della cameriera Mercedes (Dominik Garcia-Lorido), la figlia del cubano Victor (Yul Vazquez), il general manager dell’hotel; infine, la pre-adolescente Lauren (Taylor Blackwell), che vuole molto bene a Vera, ma che sente la mancanza della madre.
Tra criminali senza scrupoli, donne belle e letali, intrighi, passioni e tradimenti, Magic City è un racconto sulle conseguenze. Le conseguenze dell’ambizione sfrenata, le conseguenze del desiderio incontrollato, le conseguenze delle menzogne che spesso sembrano più vere della verità.
Ike si troverà costretto a fare un patto col diavolo, ma anche in suoi figli non saranno da meno, e si troveranno tutti invischiati in situazioni tanto eccitanti quanto pericolose.
