Giugno 1905. Tra l' equipaggio della corazzata russa Potemkin regna un vivo malcontento a causa delle vessazioni cui sono sottoposti i marinai. Il malcontento si trasforma in ammutinamento, allorché il comandante ed il medico dell' unità rifiutano di accogliere le giuste proteste dei marinai per il rancio ricavato da cibi immangiabili. La corazzata raggiunge quindi il porto di Odessa, dove il gesto compiuto dai marinai si diffonde rapidamente tra la popolazione, provocando manifestazioni di plauso e di incoraggiamento. Ma l' intervento delle guardie imperiali reprime nel sangue l' entusiasmo della popolazione. Nel frattempo un' intera squadra navale della marina russa naviga verso la città sul Mar Nero per ricondurre all' ordine gli ammutinati del Potemkin
