DESCRIPTION

Dr. Constance Petersen (Ingrid Bergman) is a psychiatrist at Green Manors mental asylum. The head of Green Manors has just been replaced, with his replacement being the renowned Dr. Anthony Edwardes (Gregory Peck). Romance blossoms between Dr. Petersen and Dr. Edwards but Dr. Edwards starts to show odd aversions and personality traits. It is discovered that he is an impostor, and amnesiac, and may have killed the real Dr. Edwardes. Dr. Petersen is determined to discover the truth through unlocking the secrets held in the impostor's mind, a process which potentially puts her and others' lives at risk.

La giovane dottoressa Petersen, assistente in una casa di cura per malati di mente, apprende un giorno che il Dr. Edward, noto scienziato, è stato nominato direttore in sostituzione del Dr. Fleury. Giunge il nuovo direttore ma un complesso di indizi molto seri fanno pensare alla dottoressa di trovarsi di fronte ad un caso di sostituzione di persona. Dopo qualche giorno il nuovo direttore le confessa di non essere il Dr. Edward ma di esserne l'assassino. Durante la notte quest'essere enigmatico lascia la clinica. Quando riesce a rintracciarlo, la dottoressa si convince ben presto di aver a che fare con un malato di mente. Attraverso un'indagine psicanalitica la dottoressa può rievocare la scena del presunto assassinio del Dr. Edward, avvenuto in montagna. La riproduzione esatta della scena provoca nel malato una crisi durante la quale il giovane riacquista la memoria e rievoca un episodio della sua infanzia che dà alla dottoressa la chiave del mistero.
