De film PATRIA vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van Arthur Knaap (Timothy Flohr), een Nederlands-Indische jongen die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog als soldaat van het Vreemdelingenlegioen in de loogravenoorlog terecht komt. Daar wacht de jonge Arthur een grote ontnuchtering wanneer de gruwelen van de loopgravenoorlog hem in versneld tempo volwassen doen worden. Vanuit die loopgraven schrijft Arthur brieven naar huis. Emotionele brieven met verhalen van de strijd en de tijdgeest.
