DESCRIPTION
Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage after the loss of their baby. The couple decide to adopt a child. When they meet the nine-year-old Estonian girl, Esther, at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan. Their young son, Daniel, is hostile to his new sister; but their deaf mute daughter, Max, is enchanted with her - at first. Eventually, Kate begins to feel that Esther is manipulative and possibly even psychologically disturbed. John refuses to listen to his wife's misgivings. Kate calls Sister Abigail at the orphanage, and the nun informs her that Esther has a troubled and mysterious history. Kate delves further into Esther's past and discovers she is not what she claims to be.

Kate e John Coleman, una coppia felicemente sposata e genitori di due bellissimi figli, Daniel e Maxine "Max", vengono messi a dura prova quando la donna, incinta del terzo figlio, partorisce un feto morto. Provata dalla situazione, che la porta ad abusare di alcol e ad avere incubi ricorrenti, Kate, d'accordo con il marito, decide di adottare una bambina, nel tentativo di superare il suo dolore e ricostruire l'equilibrio familiare. Recatasi perciò in un vicino orfanotrofio, la coppia viene presto catturata da Esther, una bambina di origini est - europee, amante della pittura, che li conquista subito con la sua dolcezza. Trasferitasi perciò a casa Coleman, quello che sembrava un felice inizio, si trasforma presto in un incubo. Esther difatti nasconde una personalità inquietante che la porta a tenere un comportamento scostante, fatto di bugie e frequenti scatti d'ira, nonché assassino.
