1825: il villaggio serbo di Schtettel è isolato a causa di un'epidemia di peste. Ma la quarantena non impedisce al Circo della Notte di accamparsi in città ed alzare le tende del proprio spettacolo, uno spettacolo che ben presto si trasformerà da piacevole intrattenimento circense a puro terrore. Infatti Emil, proprietario del circo, altri non è che il nipote del conte Mitterhouse, un crudele vampiro ucciso dagli abitanti del villaggio quindici anni prima. Diretto con mano sicura da Robert Young, il film si segnala soprattutto per l'abile montaggio delle sequenze in cui gli acrobati ed altri circensi si trasformano in animali davanti all'attonito pubblico. Anche i saturi colori della fotografia di Moray Grant contribuiscono con efficacia a mettere in evidenza sia le immagini più crude che le grazie della bella e conturbante Adrienne Corri.
