Larry Donner, che insegna letteratura in una piccola Università americana, è sfiduciato: la sua ex-moglie Margaret si è inmpossessata del suo ultimo manoscritto, lo ha spacciato come proprio ed ha avuto molto successo. Nel corso del quale è titolare, c'è tra gli uditori - giovani e adulti - uno strano ometto, Owen Lift, molto infantile e ossessionato da una madre possessiva e autoritaria, il quale si è messo in testa di scrivere dei "gialli". Anche per toglierselo un pò di torno, Donner esorta Owen a studiare soprattutto i moventi di un delitto. L'altro ci riflette su, frequenta cinema semivuoti alla caccia di film di Hitchcock e poi ha una bella pensata: lui eliminerà la moglie del professore e questi gli renderà il servizio, liberandolo dall'incubo della mamma (un mostro di donna). Con lo scambio delle vittime, la Polizia si scervellerà giusto sulla totale mancanza di moventi validi, né mai potrà risalire agli autori dei due crimini..............
