DESCRIPTION
A crippled former Kung Fu expert earns a living as a candy merchant with a friend whom he hires to attract business. When the men are harassed by a local gang, the merchant teaches his colleague monkey boxing so as to defend their business.

Chan, saltimbanco ed esperto della tecnica "Monkey Fist", viene falsamente accusato di aver violentato una donna. Per punirlo gli vengono fracassate le mani. Qualche tempo dopo conosce un giovane soprannominato "Little Monkey" che diventa suo discepolo. Ad addestramento compiuto, insieme, cercheranno la vendetta.
"Monkey Fist" é una tecnica molto usata nei film di arti marziali, ma mai é stata mostrata e messa in scena tanto bene, quanto in Mad Monkey Kung Fu.
Come in quasi tutti i suoi film del periodo l´obiettivo di Liu é di raccontare le arti marziali, rimanendo ancorato alla realtà, senza (s)cadere nel misticismo o nel sovrannaturale.
Le ottime coreografie dei combattimenti, comprendenti un ampio numero di avversari ed oggetti circostanti (qualcuno prima o poi dovrà affrontare le somiglianze da questo punto di vista con i film di Jackie Chan), e le parti comiche rendono Mad Monkey Kung Fu una piacevole visione. Inoltre Liu si riappropria di un genere che lui stesso aveva "inventato" nel 1975 con Spiritual Boxer.
Nel film Hsiao Hou, uno dei più dotati pupilli di Liu, finalmente interpreta il ruolo principale e mostra tutto il suo talento comico. Peccato che Hsiao non sia mai veramente decollato, complice anche la fine del genere in cui più eccelleva. Ottima inoltre l´intesa con Liu, che interpreta Chan e che ha qui il suo primo ruolo da protagonista, dimostrando tutte le sue abilitá marziali. Kara Hui fa giusto un´apparizione nei primi dieci minuti, mentre l´interpretazione del cattivo Duan fatta da Lo Lieh è di mestiere.
