Short review:- Belonging to a place where i wasn't exposed to English, or any other cinemas at an early age, i remember as a kid seeing this movie on television. that time we had just been exposed to television and hence new movies or even old movies were just a amazement for me to watch and indulge in. Frankly as a kid, it didn't matter to me that time, what the story was, who was directing it, and etc, but i remember as a kid, when i saw this movie, i was blown off. i think it was due to the fact, that i got exposed to the Chinese cinema and especially Mr. John Woo and Chow Yun Fat. that movie still and at that time deeply impacted me. hell i remember as a kid, i kept on looking for more movies of Woo and Chow Yun fat and slowly but steadily, i got exposed to the Woo Fantasy world and his amazing skills as a director and stunt choreographer and i will be ashamed to admit it here, that i do consider them as my idol. and it's because of the fact that both Mr.Woo and Chow Yun Fat thru hardships managed to rise up and entertain us all this years and i think no matter where they are now, and where they will be, as a die hard fan, their works shall not be ever forgotten by me.
A brother surviving as a puppet thru the hands of a landlord, his younger brother on the verge of becoming a cop, instead of a doctor as his brother had planned too. what could wrong right? only the fact, that the younger brother gets to know about his elder brother's truth and illegal activities and things get outta control. Deceit/friendship/ crime drama all mixed in right amount make this a masterpiece you can't miss. Sure i know there is a remake made of it. i haven't seen it nor i will (i think this masterpiece doesn't deserve a remake). i find it perfect in right and odd way. watch it and decide for yourself. and please please watch the end of this movie. one of the best intense/violent ending i ever saw.
P.S:- there is another movie of John Woo which i will upload eventually( but that is more intense/longer and more dramatic than this). it's about friendship and betrayal. it was critically acclaimed, but people didn't like it as much as this movie or even hard boiled. but i will upload that movie eventually to let you decide about that.
Hope you enjoy this movie and since this movie had embedded english subs which you can't turn off, some translation are not that grammatically good, but it's just a minor fault to ignore. |
