Centraal staat Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), een Joodse mensenhater uit Montreal, die op 68-jarige leeftijd terugkijkt op zijn leven.
Barney heeft drie ex-vrouwen, twee kinderen van wie hij vervreemd is geraakt,
een ouder wordende vader (Dustin Hoffman) die geen blad voor de mond neemt en hij is schijnbaar gefixeerd op zijn proces voor de moord op zijn beste vriend 30 jaar geleden.
Maar aangezien Barney in een vroeg stadium van Alzheimer verkeert moet men de waarheid uit een geheugen filteren dat wellicht selectief of gewoonweg verslechterd is.
Storyline
Take a ride through the life and memories of Barney Panofsky, a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking, foulmouthed 65-year old hockey fanatic and television producer,
