December 1979. Vlak voor de Iraanse revolutie, waarbij Ayatollah Khomeini de macht grijpt, worden twee werknemers van het Amerikaanse bedrijf EDS In Teheran gearresteerd.
Voor 13 miljoen dollar kan EDS de twee werknemers vrijkopen. H. Ross Perot, het hoofd van EDS, peinst er niet over om het losgeld te betalen.
Hij huurt de gepensioneerde kolonel "Bull" Simons (Burt Lancaster) in om een reddingsmissie te organiseren.

On Wings of Eagles is een meeslepende miniserie die het ongelofelijke, maar waargebeurde verhaal vertelt van een van de spectaculairste reddingsmissies ooit.
