DESCRIPTION

Synopis:
Chile 1973 is ruled by the dictator Pinochet. The wealthy don't see the violence, terror, executions etc. including Irene. She's engaged to an officer in the fascist military. She meets Francisco who opens her eyes to truth and love.

De Amor e de Sombras é baseado na obra da escritora chilena Isabel Allende, cujo romance A Casa dos Espíritos foi também adaptado com sucesso para o cinema por Bille August. Esta história, porém, começa onde A Casa dos Espíritos termina: no golpe militar de extrema direita que tirou do poder o presidente Salvador Allende, em 1973. Irene Beltran (Jennifer Connelly) é uma jovem jornalista que trabalha numa revista de moda. Filha de uma família tradicional, Irene vive num mundo glamouroso e alienante, longe da realidade cruel do estado policial que se instalou no país. Tudo isso muda quando ela encontra o fotógrafo Francisco (Antonio Banderas), espanhol exilado, que vai à revista em busca de emprego. Embora Irene seja noiva de um capitão do exército - Gustavo, que é seu primo - Francisco lhe desperta uma irresistível atração, pois representa a possibilidade de viver num mundo novo, longe das rígidas convenções e regras familiares.
