Gli rimane soltanto Cabel, una specie di fratellastro, figlio di Curtis, il custode dell' istituto. Lo va a trovare ma Cabel è diventato il severo comandante della polizia di Chicago e non vuole saperne di questa nuova 'parentela'. Va allora a trovare suor Maria, la sua ex madre superiora che sta cercando un tutore per Buster, un orfano di dieci anni. Elwood si ritrova così con un bambino accanto...
