Le belve, film thriller diretto da Oliver Stone, segue le vicende di Chon (Taylor Kitsch) e Ben (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), migliori amici da sempre, che coltivano marijuana a Laguna Beach, in California.
Il primo è un ex militare della Marina e ha fatto arrivare clandestinamente dall’Afghanistan i semi della droga da piantare. Il secondo, con una laurea in economia e botanica a Berkeley, si occupa di tutto il procedimento di coltivazione. Il business di cannabis gli fa guadagnare in poco tempo molti soldi, una parte dei quali sono devoluti in opere di beneficenza in Africa e in Asia. Entrambi hanno una relazione aperta con Ophelia Sage (Blake Lively).
Tutto sembra filare liscio finché i due non ricevono una serie di minacce dal cartello messicano della droga: lo scagnozzo Miguel "Lado" Arroyo (Benicio del Toro) gli invia un video dove si vedono teste mozzate e una motosega, invitandoli a incontrarsi per stabilire una collaborazione. Chon e Ben, spaventati, decidono di abbandonare il Paese per rifugiarsi con Ophelia in Indonesia e si consigliano con Dennis Cain (John Travolta), agente corrotto della DEA, che gli suggerisce invece di aggregarsi al cartello.
Tutto precipita quando la donna viene rapita dalla gang di Lado proprio per costringere i due ragazzi a collaborare. A contattarli sarà proprio il capo del cartello Elena Sánchez (Salma Hayek), che li minaccerà di uccidere Ofelia in caso di un loro rifiuto.
Riusciranno i due protagonisti a salvare la loro compagna e al tempo stesso uscire da questa assurda situazione?
