Als in 1939 de Duitsers Polen binnenvallen, moeten de joodse arts Artur en zijn familie met spoed de hoofdstad ontvluchten.
Op het platteland is het lastig om onderdak te vinden, maar zij krijgen onderdak op de boerderij van de jonge Poolse boerin Emilia,
van wie haar man na de gevechten met de Wehrmacht niet teruggekeerd is.
Terwijl de moeder en dochter zich gedurende de dag verborgen houden, woont Artur als een neef van Emilia op het hof en vervult er de rol als heer des huizes.
Maar er ontstaat een affaire tussen de twee. En ook andere, heel gevaarlijke ontwikkelingen laten niet lang op zich wachten.

Such a fragile arrangement is sustained by love - or is it just the will to survive?
