April 1917. With John still absent, Isobel's butler Molesley makes a play for Anna but is rejected. Robert gets a new valet, shell-shocked ex-soldier Henry Lang, whilst William goes off to war. Edith learns to drive a tractor extremely well, and nearly succumbs to a kiss from the married farmer Mr. Drake. Sybil and Thomas work in the cottage hospital, where the latter begins to learn some humanity. At Isobel's suggestion - and to Violet's dismay - Downton Abbey is turned into a convalescent ward to ease the hospital's bed shortage. Mary invites middle-aged newspaper tycoon, and prospective beau, Sir Richard Carlisle to a dinner party, also attended by the Crawleys and Lavinia. Suspicious of Carlisle, Violet invites her daughter and sister to the Earl, Lady Rosamund, who is intrigued by the fact that Carlisle and Lavinia already seem well-acquainted. Carson, despite being taken ill whilst serving dinner, is still perceptive enough to suggest to Mary that Matthew is really the man for her.

DESCRIPTION
Lord Grantham sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship's domineering, conservative mother, the dowager countess. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants' quarters, intriguing amongst themselves.

La serie ha sido uno de los éxitos indiscutibles de la ficción en las islas en 2010, uniendo los códigos del culebrón con ese subgénero en sí mismas que son las historias en grandes casas de campo inglesas. La serie de ITV se centra en la propiedad de Lord Grantham y en las intrigas por ver quién herederá el título, las tierras y el dinero. La familia del señor la completan su esposa, que es una rica heredera estadounidense, sus tres hijas y la condesa viuda de Grantham, madre del lord, y en la casa también seguimos las peripecias de los criados, cuyas cabezas son Carson, el mayordomo, y la señora Hughes, que es el ama de llaves. Entre ellos también hay intrigas y secretos de lo más diverso, y la acción se desplaza fluidamente entre el mundo de arriba de las escaleras y el de debajo.
Una cosa que juega a su favor es que las tramas se inicien en 1912, una época llena de cambios sociales y políticos, y la serie va, además, a toda velocidad. En una elipsis en medio de un capítulo han podido pasar meses y, de un episodio a otro, un año entero, pero el trabajo de contarnos rápidamente qué ha pasado en ese periodo de tiempo está muy logrado y ni se nota. Y a pesar de esos giros de guión muy de telenovela, hay más sutileza y pequeños detalles aquí y allá que dibujan mejor a los personajes y que enriquecen todo el conjunto.
